SOCIAL JUSTICE WIZARDS
Neverwinter, also known as the City of Skilled Hands or the Jewel of the North, is a metropolis sitting on the northwestern Sword Coast of Faerûn. Prior to the Cataclysm, Neverwinter was regarded by many as the most cosmopolitan and the most civilized city in all of Faerûn. The city was a member in good standing of the Lords’ Alliance even before Dagult Neverember installed himself as Lord Protector. The previous ruler, Lord Nasher Alagondar, ensured that the city was well defended before his death, both physically and magically, against attacks or infiltration from Luskan, Neverwinter’s warlike rival. Maps of the city, with its maze of meandering streets, were not allowed to be created or distributed as part of an effort to thwart Luskan spies. Even after Nasher’s passing and achieving relative peace with Luskan, maps of the city are few and far between.
Neverwinter sits on the Sword Coast north of Waterdeep, and south of Luskan. Founded on the shores of the Neverwinter River, the city overlooks the Sea of Swords to the West, and is surrounded by the dense and dangerous Neverwinter Wood to the North, East and South. The city of Neverwinter was so named because, even though the town is situated in the cold north of Faerûn, the Neverwinter River that flows through it is heated by fire elementals living under the nearby Mount Hotenow in the Neverwinter Wood. The heat given off from the river creates a permanent warm climate in the immediate area, without which the river and subsequently the city’s water supply, would freeze over.
